Blog Entry: September 21 - Cosmos Win Soccer Bowl 1980 The New York Cosmos won their third North American Soccer League crown in four years defeating the Fort Lauderdale Strikers 3-0 on this day in soccer history in 1980. The Big Apple sided finished the regular season24-8 and in 1st place in the National Conference’s Eastern Division.The weather was unusually hot for late September with the temperature at 99° at RFK Stadium in Washington D.C. which resulted in a slower than usually tempo and the red hot Cosmos having to wait until the second half to open the scoring.Julio Cesar Romero netted the opening goal in the 48th minute after Giorgio Chinaglia slammed a free kick off the wall with the rebound falling to Romero’s left foot. Chinaglia did the d’s work striking the free kick as well as being fouled outside the box to draw the set piece."It was the first goal that mattered." Chinaglia said later of the strike.The Strikers were hopeful coming into the match with midfielder Ray Hudson saying St Louis Blues . "The Cosmos are talent-laden. I know. But they are 40% better on AstroTurf than grass. Grass is the great leveler.
